Course Study Materials at the University

Computer Science

The teaching transcripts and/or lecture material of the Computer Science courses are invariably read on the course home page either at the beginning of the course or appear there iteratively during the course. In general, printing lecture transcripts doesn't make much sense.

Often, courses in computer science also involve some fundamentals in the field as a course book. Course books the student is not obliged to acquire, in fact few students even feel it is necessary (at least in bachelor's studies). Of course, fundamentals will probably be useful in advanced studies later. If you want to try to borrow a book, see the Kumpula Campus Library below. Gurula also has books to read in the department.

Department of Mathematics and Statistics

Also in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, the course's lecture material can usually be found in its entirety in pdf format from the course page. If for some reason this is not the case, then the lecture transcripts will be copied from the 'course folder'. These folders can be found in Exactum's 1st floor duplicating room (C127). [is this up to date?]' Courses in basic mathematics generally survive without literature. In the case of subject studies and advanced courses in mathematics, there are exceptions.

What about other subjects materials?

For other subjects, the use and availability of learning materials is subject- and course-specific. Usually, during the first lecture of the course, you will find out if any ready-made material is used and where to get the material. Not all subjects (often humanistic, political science) may use ready-made lecture slides at all, or the slides are not given for copying.

Libraries of University of Helsinki

For many courses, you can find a few copies of books in the Kumpula Campus Library. Library also has other literature related to the field. Some of the books in the library are volumes that can be read in the library but are not borrowed out. Borrowed books are divided into normal books with a longer loan period and short loan period course books. If no volumes are on the shelf, you can reserve the book for yourself for a nominal fee. In this case, the previous borrower cannot renew their loan.

The library is located in Physicum, a building adjacent to Exactum. Physicum is accessible via a gateway ( wondering through outdoor wilderness is also possible). The library entrance can be found on the first floor next to the UniCafe café.

Kirjastokorttina toimii opiskelijakortti tai erillinen kirjastokortti. Kirjaston lainoja voi uusia, ja kirjoja hakea/varata, Helka-järjestelmän nettisivuilla.

Book Shelf in Gurula

Gurulassa pyritään pitämään kattava valikoima kurssien oppikirjoja ja muuta yleishyödyllistä materiaalia. Nämä kirjat on tarkoitettu luettavaksi ja opiskelun avuksi Gurulassa, ryhmätyötiloissa, neuvontapajassa jne. Älä vie näitä kirjoja kotiin!

TKO-älyllä tai kampuksella ei tällaista palvelua valitettavasti ole. Gurulan ilmoitustaululla tosin on välillä ilmoituksia myynnissä olevista, vanhempien opiskelijoiden käytetyistä kurssikirjoista.
