Since early 2022, you are officially a ''Doctoral Researcher'' (fin. ''Väitöskirjatutkija'').
As of 2022, you are a ''Doctoral Researcher'' (fin. ''Väitöskirjatutkija'').

When communicating with others, note that the term "graduate student" can refer to either a master's or a PhD student. The Finnish term "jatko-opiskelija" refers to only PhD students (or those working on their licensiate). As such, using the term "graduate student" can cause some confusion. Other common synonyms useful abroad are "''PhD candidate''" and "''PhD student''".

Pirjo Moen, the department research coordinator, has a long document detailing all the steps. Guidance is also available online:

Note that the process is rather long: your thesis must be discussed in two separate faculty council meetings before the defense, with up to two months between them. The printing process also takes a long time, an must be completely well in advance, to ensure the thesis is publicly displayed for more than 5 ''full working days'' before the defense.
'''Make yourself a schedule of the various deadlines well in advance''', and take not of any holidays that might disrupt the schedule: many of the deadlines are expressed as "working days before defense" rather than as normal days.
